So The Masters, or King of The Hill, or just Top Poodle, - call it what you will - is a very simple idea. I collect the results of ranking competition games and award players 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and zero for a loss. The person who racks up the highest score in competition games over the year is the Big Cheese, The Grand Master etc.
To be a ranking competition it has to meet 3 criteria:- 1. It's a competition, whether league, knockout or a combination of the 2. It's not a campaign. 2. It needs to have at least a dozen players. If 4 guys decide to play some obscure ruleset they could run up a high score if they kept playing each other. We want the Grand Master to be someone who has vanquished scores of lesser mortals across several rule systems. 3.It needs an organiser who keeps track of wins and losses and sends them to me.
This year there have been 3 ranking competitions - 40K, Fantasy and ADLG.
At the moment Neil 'My Demons know no mercy' Robins is leading the pack (21 points) by virtue of his 4 wins in the 40K competition and 3 in Fantasy. I think that's a 100% win rate and not unexpected.
The chasing pack is some way back. It's led by Craig Douglas (a 40K player who needs to try other systems if he's to challenge Neil) and Luke (one day I'll have a painted army) Conway. Just behind them are Ben Hewkin, Nick Cooper, Cyntac, and (shockingly) yours truly.
However, the game is still very much afoot. 40K has only a couple of knockout rounds to go. Fantasy and ADLG are about to start the knockouts. A good run to the final could see Neil's lead slip away.
By my reckoning 41 members have participated in competition games, but obviously the advantage lies with those who take part under more than one ruleset. Some rulesets have this year been dominated by campaigns - Malifaux (James' excellent Shifting Loyalties campaign), FOGR (The Horsemen are Coming - Eastern Europe 1500AD) and PBI (Western Desert 1941)both organised by Steve 'The Quiet Man' Littlefield. Next year these might return to a more tooth and claw competition basis, and that could change things dramatically as more of the guys who play primarily historical stuff get involved.

The idea was to award the Master with the coveted green polo shirt! Resplendent with name year etc. We can't afford a blazer like those golfing types.
