Dear all,
the chariots have started to rumble across the tables! I have a quick report from the first game, Ken against Richard. However, as they had got there before I had published the scoring system, I'll wait until I have checked out the numbers before I publish it.
Tonight, I played Paul in 25mm, New Kingdom Egyptian against Sargonid Assyrian. The table was virtually bald, with all terrain hugging the edge. I advanced rapidly. On my left my chariots skirmished back from Paul's cavalry and mediocre sword. In the centre, I avoided his heavy sword and delayed them by skirmishing with a couple of chariots. On the right, I pushed forward with my archers and medium sword, hoping to disrupt his heavy chariots before impact. This didn't work, and Paul made short work of the bowmen. Had he remembered how his army worked, it would have been much better for him, as he forgot they were impact and we both forgot furious charge.
I tried not to act too concerned about the hole where my archers had been, and tried to get my swordsman to a position of advantage, and gradually picked off a cavalry and two chariots from the flank. In the centre, my chariots delayed. On my left, Paul charged his mediocre swords into my chariots. Which proved to be a quick lesson in why mediocre medium foot try not to get engaged by mounted in the open.
Losses were mounting on both sides, and I was pushing some archers hard around the right flank and towards his camp. In the centre, my chariots were fighting a desperate rearguard action to avoid losing my camp. My troops won the race, took his damp and broke his army. However, it justified the phrase " a Pyrric victory" and so ended up 10-7 to me. And if Paul had used all of the rules at the right time, he may have had a significant early advantage.
on another note, Martin would like to play in the 15mm. As I only stepped in to balance the numbers, I am quite happy to step out and Martin will take my place, using Assyrians. ( I haven't checked the list yet)
Keep on playing the games, and let me know the results either personally or by email. Giving me a report is a good way of spreading the propaganda....
