The Devil Strahd
• The vampire Strahd von Zarovich dwells in Castle Ravenloft – a place of peril • He is a curse placed on the land because of a forgotten sin of our ancestors • Vampires must rest in a coffin during the day, they cannot enter a home without an invite, and are vulnerable to running water and sunlight • The sun hasn’t shone unobscured for centuries • At night, Strahd can summon wolves and bats. He can transform into these creatures or a cloud of mist. He can dominate people with his stare.
Barovia
• The fog prevents anyone from leaving but gypsies, the Vistani, who serve Strahd • Strangers are drawn to Barovia but quickly die or disappear • Wolves of all kinds roam the Svalich Woods, and bats fill the night sky. • The town of Vallaki is in the heart of the valley • The fortified village of Krezk and its abbey lie further west • A powerful but mad wizard haunts the foothills of Mount Baratok to the north
Beliefs
• The Morninglord used to watch over the people during the day but prayers to him are no longer answered • Mother Night’s presence is still felt at night but she no longer answers prayers either. • She has forsaken Barovia and sent Strahd to punish us

What the Vistani say:
‘The devil Strahd’ is of royal blood. He died centuries ago but has returned as a vampire.
He has taken many consorts but has known only one true love: a Barovian peasant girl named Tatyana. Her fate is not known.
Castle Ravenloft is named after Strahd’s mother, Queen Ravenovia. Strangers are not welcome at the castle without an invitation.
This land is named after his father, King Barov. Strahd conquered it centuries ago.
Barovians are simple, frightened people. Some have old souls but most do not. The soulless ones know only fear: they have no charm, spark or hope, and never cry.
The souls of those who die in Barovia are prisoners in Strahd’s domain.
Vistani curses are potent but only invoked with great caution. To curse one who is unworthy of punishment can have grave consequences for the one who utters the curse.
Ravens carry lost souls within them. Killing one is bad luck.
Avoid the old windmill on the Vallaki road at all costs.
