just a couple of battles last friday. Steve and Gavin had a hard fought set to. Heres the report,
"
Gavin's Hittites fought Steve Littlefield's Tsin Chinese of the 'Spring and Autumn' period, under the brilliant Duke Wen. Heavy expenditure in army points technology was needed to bring the Chinese dagger-axe foot up from an anti-chariot medium spear role to the halberdier quality demanded by the LADLAG army list.
Terrain was demanding again, with extensive brush on the Hittite left, a wood in the centre, and a large marsh blocking the Chinese left.
This effectively neutralised the Hittite chariots who were limited to making a demonstration, holding the Chinese chariots in position behind the marsh, and drawing off a couple of units from the Chinese reserve. This left the battle to be decided by a bloody showdown between the infantry in the left and centre of the battlefield.
First blood was taken on the Chinese right. Conscript bowmen moved forward supported by the halberdiers. The Hittite foot were goaded into an attack, the halberdiers moving forward to engage them through the bowmen. Gavin rolled well however, and overlapped both flanks in the crucial first turn.
In the centre, the Chinese drove away the Hittite allied skirmishers but found the wood difficult going. The Hittites threw everything into the forest: spearmen; skirmishers; and eventually Syrian javelinmen. One skirmisher unit fought valiantly, quickly elminating two halberd units.
The Hittites gave way slowly on the extreme left, but broke through in the left centre and waded into the reserve bowmen. In the central forest both sides threw in more reserves. The battle was decided at the very end of the final turn when Hittite spears, supported by the aforementioned skirmisher unit, won a melee against a halberdier unit. 10-7 to Gavin, and all hail the dice."
it was interesting to see how well the skirmishers fought in a wood. Also, how little either general trusted their chariots to do the fighting, as it was all down to the infantry.
There was another battle, but I didnt get to see this one. Richard played Martin. Here's the report,
"
Battle Report Neo Assyrians (Martin) v Kushite (Richard)
The Kushites had the initiative and chose to be the attacker
Kushite(K) Left Wing was composed of Elite Light chariots supported by light horse javelin. These were sent aggressively at the Assyrian(A) right composed of heavy infantry supported by LF and LH.
The whole game was spent with LC shooting at HI to modest effect but with HC unable to chase them away.
In the centre the K’s fielded massed bow supported by Javelinmen. After a period of defensively standing on a hill they advanced and long range shooting caused some disorder on manouvering horse and HCh which the A had sent from their left centre to feint against/ challenge the K LCh operating on the A’s right. These disordering shots were crucial as the K centre was just able to stand when hit by HCh and cavalry which turned to attack the K foot centre.
K right wing. Lch were sent against an imposing A left composed of Hch and Hcav. They fought a skirmishing battle, until forced to turn and fight the relentlessly advancing A’s, and, were eventually wiped out. They had however caused disruption and disorder to the advancing A units.Delaying the killer blow to the now exposed right flank of K’s bow and jav men who had desperately formed a fragile line of defence.
Just on the verge of an overwhelming attack by Hch and HCav on the K infantry centre, the A’s realised that they had suffered severe losses ie reached break point. The A’s disengaged leaving the field, no longer wishing to expend more irreplaceable veteran troops to a never ending torrent of arrows.
The K’s had suffered very heavy casualties but hung on long enough to achieve a hard fought victory and were glad to see the A’s go.
A battle typified by high quality well equipped soldiery(A) led by high quality commanders v higher numbers of lesser quality(apart from 4 elite LCh) led by commanders of lesser ability(K)
Points Richard 10 Martin 7
So that league is drawing to a conclusion, with just Martin and Ken to play. If Ken gets a maximum, he will top the group.
Everybody else needs to keep playing so we can get the leagues done in a reasonable time
