Dear all,
Three battles to report on. But first of all , a big thank you to richard, Neil Ken and Martin who have finished their league. Its on the attached spreadsheet. i had missed Neil and Richard had drawn, so it ended up really close . Ken was threatening to win, but reverted to form on the last game and subsided to third, while Richard and Neil drew for the first place, and go through.
Battle reports.
Firstly, Steve L and Paul g played. Old adversaries, it was on the little I saw, a bitty game wit lots of elements flanking and being flanked in their turn. Both siad there were a lot of extreme dice rolls, but neither has put pen to paper to flesh out the details. Apparently, 10-5 to Paul G.
Ken, as noted above, couldnt keep up the high standard he had set, and Martin held him to a draw. I only have a few details, but apparently Martin could turn the dice to advantage when needed, and consistently scored just enough to delay and frustrate Ken's plans. this led to Martin having the advantage and a 5-2 scoreline.
Fortunately , some propagandists were playing , and enetertainingly, we have both players submitting a battle report. Chris M played Max. Ill give you Chris' first as it is fuller.
"The Assyrian Empire and Neo Babylonians clashed on the open plains in a battle of a very gentlemanly competitive nature.
The terrain was quite open with just a small wood on the Assyrian right base line and two fields on the Babylonian left flank (opposite the wood more or less) and a small hill on the Babylonian left flank baseline. This left plenty of open ground for both forces in the centre. Max had the higher initiative, 5 to my 3, and won the dice roll so elected to be the attacker.
My deployment from left to right was;
Left flank command under a brilliant general -
1 bow armed light horse, 1 bow armed elite medium cavalry, 2 elite heavy chariots, 1 ordinary heavy infantry swordsman with support and 1 elite heavy infantry swordsman with armour and support
Centre under a competent general-
4 ordinary heavy infantry swordsmen with support, 1 elite heavy infantry swordsman with armour and support, 1 ordinary heavy infantry swordsman with support and 1 elite heavy chariot and 1 ordinary heavy chariot.
Right flank under a competent general-
2 elite medium cavalry bow armed, 1 ordinary medium cavalry bow armed, 1 ordinary light horse bow armed and 1 light infantry bow armed (who hid in the wood for the entire battle)
Opposite, from Max's right to left were - 1 LH bow, 2 MC bow, 4 HCh (2 elite, 2 ordinary)1 LI bow, 6 MI 1/2 bow, 1/2 sword, 5 MC bow and 1 LH bow (20 units)
My line up looked like this - 1 LH bow, 1 MC bow, 2 HCh (2 elite),1 HI, 1 elite HI, 6 HI with support (1 elite), 2 HCh, 3 MC bow (1 elite), 1 LH bow, 1 LI bow (19 units)
As you can see Max had a stronger right flank, as did I (in theory!) He also had a Stratagist, a brilliant general and a competent general.
The main difference in our forces was that Max had medium infantry with bows and would try and shoot me down before I could hit him with my heavy infantry in hand to hand, where he would become mediocre. My hope was that the heavy infantry could get into action without having suffered too much disruption from the bow fire and then last longer in the hand to hand combat.
First contact was on my right flank between the medium cavalry when Max elected to stand and fight with 3 of his MC against my 3 MC and evade with the other 2 which were charged by my 2 H Chariots. In the centre my troops came within bow fire range and 2 units suffered a cohesion loss from Max's massed bow fire. On the left flank I tried to gang up on Max's LH with my LH and MC, however Max brought up his MC and my MC took a cohesion loss from bow fire. Rather than get charged by 2 MC while I was disrupted I chose to evade, but this left my LH open to massed bow fire next turn. Max then charged his 4 H Ch into my 2 H Ch, getting an overlap on both combats.
Did I mention that Max had sought out his "lucky dice" at the start of the game?
In just one round of combat one of my elite Heavy Chariots was destroyed and the other suffered a cohesion loss.... In the centre I continued to advance my HI towards Max's bow line, taking cohesion losses on all but the elite HI unit. I had obviously picked my "unlucky dice" for this battle. Fortunately my right flank was winning the battle of the MC's and Max lost 2 units of MC.
The main infantry battle was now joined as my HI crashed into Max's MI - and promptly lost all but one of the combats....3 units of HI went "red" (lost 3 cohesion) and 2 went "yellow" (2 cohesion). Only the elite HI held their own. As Max was kind enough to say, "It is all a game of skill- just roll high dice."
Even though Max had to deduct 1 from his die roll in melee when he rolled a 4,5 or 6 my die rolls of 1's and 2's all along the line was just plain frustrating!
In the 2nd round of melee nothing improved and I lost 2 units of HI. In the MC battle on my right flank Max's lone MC managed to stay in the melee even after being hit in the flank by one of my H Chariots. Disrupted and hit in the flank meant the MC was on -1 to start with, unfortunately my MC was also disrupted so only started on +1.
Die roll result: Max 5 - Chris 1, final score Max 4 Chris 2. I was fortunate not to have been destroyed....
On the left flank my MC and LH joined up to fight Max's LH and 2 MC and 1 H Ch. This fight went my way and I managed to destroy 1 of Max's MC units (that "game of skill" 6 to 1 went in my favour this time).
However the next round of fighting would see a dramatic end to the battle.
On the right flank Max's MC once again held on and he drew my LH off from it's overlap position by charging it with his LH.
In the centre my HI lost all but one combat once again, with the total loss of 2 units of HI and just 1 unit of MI loosing a cohesion level.
On the left flank my HI had tried to help out the remaining elite H Chariot by charging into one of Max's H Ch. Obviously they just succeeded in getting disrupted, which meant I had reach a demoralisation total of 18 and we still had the H Ch face off to decide.
Time to put in the Brilliant General.
Max did question if I really wanted to do that, as if the H Ch routed there was a 50% chance of the General being killed.
I informed Max that if the H Ch routed it was game over anyway, as I could only afford to loose 1 more point of demoralisation...
Yes, you guessed it, Max rolled a 5 and I rolled a 2, final score Max 7, Chris 3 - dead H Chariot and a 10 - 5 win to Max. (I had managed to get Max up to 14 demoralisation.)
A fun game and a fair result - I just need to get some "lucky dice"."
And then Max's
"My genius knows no bounds.
My battle with Chris McNeil. Well, armies were similar again. Chariots, swords and a good chunk of cavalry bow.
But I had spent on initiative and got it again. So I had lots of room to manoeuvre. Chris had problems early on with his cavalry running out of room. Consequently I chewed up one mounted flank. On the other I made a rare mistake and did not evade letting Chris chew me up. This was foolish since I had room..
The real problem for Chris was the centre. My bow/sword shot him up very badly before he was forced to go in. Even though I fought mediocre, it was enough to pop him. Infantry without armour is very vulnerable to bow.
Despite my brilliance it was very close. I had lots of yellow markers and if Chris had armour on his swords or I lost initiative it would have been different.
Still another triumph. "
So you can try and work out exactly what went on! Still, another win to Max.
Please keep playing the games. Very few played in the other half of the 25mm comp, so please crack on with them.
Tony
