With the last year's Open league about to conclude and most of the league games played in the Chariot Wars comp I thought I'd try to get the ball rolling on the next (and give El Presidente a chance to just take part). With the Devizes competition coming up I thought I also I'd try to put into action some of the previous discussion on trying to up our collective game. So the rules will be: - There will be leagues for both 25mm and 15mm
- You can use any army from 450AD to 1040AD (and there are some surprising ones that were still going then). No Knights may be fielded. For those going to Devizes note that their comp starts at 500AD (so no super Romans for that one)
- Lists to be 200 points
- We will use fixed armies. That means that you chose your army at the start (say, Anglo-Saxon) but that you can vary the army between games. It will not be fixed lists.
- No decalaration of armies to be used until all the entries (including army to be used) are in.
- Any army found to be illegal will grant an automatic victory to the opponent so long as their list is legal. If both are illegal then the result will stand.
Anyone interested in playing just let me know, along with whch size (big, little or both) and which lists you will be using. Given the proximity of Devizes I'd like to get the leagues started in May if possible. For those intererested in taking part but lacking armies do get in touch as there may be some available for loan (I've got several 25mm armies for this period and I know that there are some others also willing to lend). I'm in.
I'll be playing in both 25mm and 15mm.
I have only one army that really works in period in 25s but lots in 15mm. So loan armies are available.

One clarification please?
You can vary your list within the chosen fixed army, but can you take allies? And if so can you take different allies in each game or are you stuck with the same ally?
So for example if I choose Late Imperial Roman as my list can I take Armenian allies in one game and Arabs in another and no ally in a third?

I think that given that part of the aim is to encourage experimentation with lists I will not require players to keep the same allies throughout. So, to use the example mentioned by Chris, Patrician Romans with Armenians in one game, Arabs in the next and no allies in the third would be fine.

During the shout I said I'd help people out with loan armies.
I keep losing track of who's borrowed what so what I'll do is bring your army each time you need it. That'll also mean that I can team and lade between different figure collections so people have what they need.
At 25mm I'll be using my Late Imperial Romans and my other 25mm armies are not in period.
At 15mm I have the following armies you could go for:-
1. Late Imperial Roman/Patrician Roman 2. Justinian/Maurikian Byzantine 3. Nikephorian Byzantine (note that this list splits at 1042 so if you use this army you can only use the early variant). 4. Almost any of the Arab armies- 131 to 139 inclusive. 5. Hindu Indian 6. Carolingian 7. Feudal Spanish 8. Norman 9. Anglo-Danish
That's 19 armies. By mixing things up some of the others as well.
If you want to borrow figures just let me know.
regards Chris

So I have decided on my choices.
25/28mm Patrician Roman (List 87)
15mm Tang and Five Dynasties Chinese (list 169).
So all the 15mm loan armies listed above are available.
I've put these up in case anyone imagines there's an advantage to trying to find the perfect 'counter-list'.

So, the entrants I have so far are:
25mm Chris Joe Tony Me
15mm Gavin Brian George Chris Me
Plus Bryan said he wanted to take part (though I don't think he's mentioned a scale yet).
Any others looking to take part? I'm keen to put the leagues up by Sunday the 14th.
As well as Chris' offer of 15s, I should be able to offer the following options in 25s: 1) Justinian/Maurikian Byzantine 2) Patrician Roman/Sub Roman British 3) Welsh 4) Pre-Feudal Scots 5) Normans/Bretons
They are mostly based up for WAB, so I'll need a little notice to get them ready of ADLG. I may also be able to rustle up some allies for the lists (I've a fair number of barbarian infantry already painted, plenty of Huns/steppe horse archers and I've some Vikings sat on the painting table) so if you'd like to borrow anything give me a shout.
I will be running Anglo-Saxons in the 25s (as I've painted them but never used them) so currently we have four different lists (though three of them are quite similar). And for 15s, to try something completely different, Chris could I borrow your Hindu Indians please (which will be at least three different lists amongst the 15s)?

No worries - the Hindu Indians are champing at the bit as I speak.

Mike are your Sub Roman British the same as Romano British?

Technically "Romano-British" covers Britain during the period under effective Roman Rule (to around 410 AD) and "Sub-Roman" the period from 410AD to the fall of the last British Kingdom (Strathclyde) outside of Wales in the 11th Century, so there may have been a translation issue and/or a lack of knowledge by the writer of the detail of British History. But yes, it is list 101 and I'm fairly sure that I do have some quite pretty Gripping Beast Cav painted up as "Arthur" and chums (I'll need to check as it has been a few years since they've seen the table).
Interested?

Yes Mike thanks, the Arthurian angle seals it.
