Dear all,
Just a couple of battles to update you about. Bryan and Paul had a battle, whichwas interrupted mainly by Paul moaning about his dice throwing. Maybe it was justified, as he lost, giving Bryan a 10-7 win. No report though...
The two Chris' had a battle. I have a report from Chris M.
"Chris R summed up the battle (game) quite well. His right flank consisted of heavy cavalry opposite my medium cavalry and 2 heavy chariots. His centre of medium infantry, mixed sword and bow faced my heavy infantry, by staying in the field that I had foolishly moved from Chris's left flank into his centre... Chris's left flank of 4 heavy chariots faced my 2 heavy chariots 1 medium cavalry and 1 light horse. I was the attacker and moved forward all along the line. (First mistake - I should have held my right flank back as 2 H/chariots vs 4 H/chariots was not a good match up). As my left flank advanced Chris retired his H/Cav, leaving his retiring light hose to be charged in the rear by my l/horse after Chris's l/h had become disrupt by my bow fire. First blood to me as his light horse routed. This did leave my l/h open to being charged by Chris's h/cav but I was fortunate to only become disrupted and held on until my m/cav could ride up to help out. Chris stayed to fight with half his h/cav but wisely retired those that were in front of my h/chariots. On my right flank Chris got his 4 h/chariots into charge range and charged forwarded into my 2 h/chariots, 1 m/cav and a disrupted H/I unit. They had wandered into range of Chris's bow armed infantry and despite being elite with armour still lost the dice roll off.... Chris won all the dice roll offs on that flank nad my right was looking fragile from the word go. By the time I was able to back Chris's H/cav up enough that they had to stand and fight more of my HI had become disrupted from the enemy bow fire. As Chris said, at one stage he had lost 7 units to my 4, but I had been unable to rally most of the disrupted units and soon all but one of the 6 units on my right had routed (a couple of bad dice results notwithstanding) Soon I was having to commit Generals into the fights to counteract my low dice rolls. The unit losses swung to Chris's favour and I had lost 7 units also.
In the last turn my Brilliant General joined the single HI unit left from his command as it had 3 disruption markers on it and needed to win or draw the dice roll off to save the day. I lost, and the army broke. Chris threw to see if he killed my General, which he did. It mattered not as I had 7 routed units and 5 disruption markers on my other units so it was game over. Dice rolls aside, the bow fire did the damage and I was unable to rally troops even when I need a 4+.
A close fought and enjoyable game."
And a summary of his battles from Chris R, and his opinion on life, the universe, and everything....( Well ADLG actually, but the quote is good)
"
I have so far refrained from commenting on my games, but having completed my league, I thought it was about time to do so.
First – I had a narrow win against Chris last night. I broke his army but suffered 18 attrition point losses (army has 21 in total).
Second – the 3 games were very different. The first game v Max was over before it began. Our centres were both medium foot. Both right wings comprised 4 heavy chariots – mine being elite and his being supported by some medium cavalry. My left consisted of 5 HC + 1MC and 1 LC(bow). His was 4 or 5 MC + 1LC. But his advantage from gaining the initiative meant that his chariots could catch my cav but mine couldn’t catch his. Moreover by moving up my centre to try and help out the cav I left them open to be attacked by both his foot and his chariots. A disaster. Second game v Denis I thought I had set things up well and, despite losing initiative, I had a number of good match-ups initially. But the dice deserted me and where I was up I won slowly or not at all, allowing Denis to feed in additional troops who swung the combats against me. Against Chris I wasn’t happy with deployment but had a plan – faff about with the cav as long as possible and try and swing the chariots round from the left and roll him up. Critically I had a nice field in which to place my bow armed MF which Chris didn’t really have the troops to attack it. At one point I had lost 7 units to Chris’ 4 but many more of his remaining units were disrupted and the chariots made the breakthrough.
Third- the game is very dice dependent. I think that’s particularly true in a period with very little HI – a 3 cohesion point unit can easily go puff in a single combat- but applies across the game as a whole.
Four – if you want to use ‘shoot and scoot’ tactics then you need to win the initiative. I defended every game and my HC wing never got the chance to use this approach. Max’s tactic of going for a Strategist effectively won him the game against me.
Five – HC should be better than MC but in fact it’s debatable. Against Cataphracts or Heavy Chariots MC are just as resilient in combat and just as likely to do shooting damage. MC Elite (which costs the same as HC) are better in both combat and shooting. So really the only advantage of HC is against MC (where their armour gives them an edge in both shooting exchanges and combat) or when shot at by foot bows. And in both cases MC Elite maybe just as good."
So not many games to go. Please keep playing them so we can get this concluded, and hopefully you will all join in the Dark Ages one that Mike is going to run.
