Dear all,
The league stages are drawing to a close.
In the 25mm league that I am in, it was very tight, with 3 of us ending up on 34 points and 1 on 34. As i came up with the scoring system, I will step aside and so Paul G and Steve L go through.
In the other 25mm league, Ken and Steve T go through, although it would be nice for them to play their game to see who comes out on top.
One 15mm league is concluded, with Neil and Rihard goibg through.
The othe one is a nail biter, with Max and Denis to play. ( this game was arranged but illness forced its cancellation). Currently, Chris M is top, but either Max or Dennis could overtake him. All to play for in the crucial last game.
Some outstanding reports for your perusal.....
Firstly, Paul K and Ken
Paul and I played our game last night resulting in a 10:7 win to myself after a very hard fought battle with units falling all over the field.
Paul attacked across a plain dotted with fields and plantations; with a village on left flank base edge and a gully on attackers extreme left flank which played no part in the game. Paul’s Chinese deployed with their H/Chariot Knights on their open left flank, spear swordsmen and bows with Knight support in the centre and their charging swordsmen on the more terrain cluttered right flank. The Hittites deployed their weak skirmish/javelinmen command on their left, the large spear command in the centre, and the spear/swordsmen with light chariot and light horse bowmen in support.
Paul was blessed with high movement dice for most of the game, and lost no time in advancing across the table with all his commands. My Hittites sent their skirmishers forward on the left threatening the exposed flank of the swordsmen, whilst the javelinmen deployed into line to support. In the centre, the spears advanced to threaten the shorter Chinese centre, whilst on the right the Light horse and chariots advance to skirmish with the extreme left of the Knights.
The Hittite skirmishers on both flanks achieved their objective of distracting the Chinese; causing the Swordsmen to halt outside shooting range, whilst two Knights swung out of line to chase the L/Chariots & LH. The Chinese centre also halted as a result of the advance of the Hittite spears, whilst their supporting Knights joined the rest of the Knights on the left flank.
The Hittite R/flank spears moved towards the main Knight line to prevent it interfering with the light chariots; leaving one spear to block the two Knights following up the L/Chariots. A clash was inevitable and next turn the Chinese smashed into both Hittite flank commands. Their Swordsmen forced the light infantry to evade, and carried on into the Javelinmen. Due to the line ups only two units were engaged on each side with overlaps, and in both combats, the side with the overlap prevailed causing a demoralisation. On the Knights flank, numbers were even on the main line, with the Knights being up; but the result was two draws and 3 demoralisations for the Knights (the results would have been far worse without their armour and elite status). The two Knights hitting the individual spear unit were also unsuccessful despite the overlap, although both Knights units began the combat demoralised from previous bow fire.
Next turn The Hitties threw their light chariots into the overlapping Knight, whilst the light horse hit the engaged knight in the rear. The centre spear command meanwhile sent a spear to overlap the far end of the main Knight line. In the centre the two Chinese Bow units had been engaged in a fairly ineffective attempt at weakening the Hittite spears; most turns any hits caused the previous turn were removed. On the Hittite right flank they brought their own bowmen out of the village and into range of the Swordsmen’s left flank and caused a disruption. Both sides managed to eliminate their damaged opponent, which left opportunities for both sides to turn flanks.
Over the next few turns both sides brought more troops into the battle and disruption markers began to mount. Paul displayed an amazing knack for removing disruption points from his knights in combat, saving them from elimination on a number of occasions. The Hittites were not so fortunate and a number of units became critical, including one of the central spearman that was finally finished off by the Chinese bowman, leaving a hole in the line. But Paul was having to throw his Generals into combat on both flanks to keep things afloat. Units began to tumble on both sides with the Knights losing three of their number, but taking out Hittites in equal measure. On the Hittite left, numbers began to tell and despite virtually all the Javelinmen falling, the Swordsmen ended up with just a skirmisher and the general (who had a charmed life) surviving.
By the end of the game, both the Hittite flanks were in tatters, but still fighting. The Chinese right had disintegrated, their centre was under pressure of being outflanked from their right, and the Knights on the right had lost at least four out of the seven they started with. Paul’s army broke on 21, but in the last turn he well exceeded that; whilst the Hittites, who broke on 31, squeaked past the finish line with losses of 27!! The Knights almost won it for Paul; their hit value and armour, plus three of them being Elite, made them very tough opponents. Conversely, my mediocre Javelinmen on the other flank, despite falling like ninepins at the end, had pinned down the swordsmen long enough for them to be whittled down by shooting and a rash attack on my spear whilst demoralised.
I’m sure I’ve missed out some vital bits from Paul’s perspective, but there was so much combat, some was bound to slip through the memory net. Thanks to Paul for a great game that literally went to the wire.
Secondly, Graham against Paul K.
The terrain fell mainly to the side of the table and had no real effect on the game but one plantation and one field did have an effect. The plantation was in my centre near to the centre line and the field was on my right flank and was not touching the side of the table. Paul being the attacker moved both pieces towards the nearest table edges. As defender I was lucky with my dice and moved them back again. So we ended up with one plantation in the centre of the table within one move from my set up area and the field was partially within my set up area on my right.
As usual when I put my first command out my opponent start to panic. 8 medium and 4 heavy (with support) spears. These were put into the centre so that 4 Medium spears could move straight into the plantation on my first move. The 4 Heavies next to them in the open and my other 4 medium on the right of the line. Paul put his centre command out that was made up of 3 guard 2HCW opposite the plantation then some spears, bows, more 2HCW and finally 2 heavy chariots facing my right hand Medium spears. Next out was my right hand command with the 2 Light chariot behind the field, my 1 bow unit extending the line of spears and my 2 units of swords and 2 LI with slings in the field. To oppose them Paul put down 5 heavy Chariots (3 Guard) UG! My last command went to the left of the plantation and consisted of 3 heavy chariots, 1 Medium Cav (mediocre), 2 LI with Javelins and 1 Bow. Paul put out opposite them 4 Medium swords, 1 2HCW and 1LI with bow.
Paul advanced all his troops for his first turn. I started to try and slide my heavy spears to my right to counter Paul’s chariots while my left hand medium spears went into the plantation. On my right my slingers advanced to firing range of Pauls Chariots. On my left my cavalry made a sweeping advance to menace Paul’s swords flank, while my 2 javelins advanced against Paul’s LI bow. Paul’s next move was to advance his centre to bow range, charge his chariots at my slings who hoped back into the field and charge his left wing infantry at my 2 javelins who retreated behind my chariots and my 1 unit of Bow. The centre came to a halt from then on with Paul firing his Bows at my Heavy Spears. All the action now takes place on both wings.
On my left Paul’s swordsmen found themselves in front of my chariots, overlapping both sides. However, I still had my cavalry unit on his flank, which I charged and for once my dice did not fail me. After a couple of rounds the swordsmen unit died, therefore removing one overlap. Paul did a very strange thing, his other overlap (unit of 2HTW) which was near to plantation charged past my chariots and into my bow unit which was to the rear of the rear face of my chariots, covering their flank. Combat dice were thrown and a miracle, the bow unit had survived. My turn and one of Javelins moved up to support my Bow and one of my Medium Spears in the plantation turn and charged into the rear of the 2HTW, who died very quickly. I finally charged my chariots at Paul’s Swordsmen, with my cavalry coming in on the open flank. After a couple of rounds of
melee they were all gone. My chariots then started to advance and I got one into contact on Paul’s guard 2HCW but the game ended before I could get into position to ride down Paul’s centre from the flank. Paul’s General and his remaining LI from his right flank was last see making a bee line for his baggage, hotly pursued by cavalry and LI with javelins.
On my right flank it was a completely different story. I had moved my light chariots from behind the field and formed a line facing Paul’s Heavy Chariots but practically on my table edge. This did not bother Paul who advanced 2 chariots down the side of the field to attack them. At this point my movement dice fail me and I threw a one. If I had more movement I could have charged my Light Chariots and turn one of my swordsmen and charged into the flank of one of Pauls chariots. Paul’s next move was to charge my chariots and dispatch them very quickly. Meanwhile his other chariots had been dealing with some of my Medium Spears, Bows and swordsmen. I did have some success and overall I lost more elements then Paul. I tried bringing in my Heavy Spears to stand up to Paul’s Heavy Chariots but with not much success as Paul threw in some 2HCW units to help. At the end of the game Paul’s two flank chariots were bearing down onto my Baggage even though they were being hit by stones from my slingers. Only my slings and one unit of swordsmen, plus General was left of my right flank and that was because they were in the field and Paul’s Chariots would (sensibly) not charge them.
It was a great fun game and we both thoroughly enjoyed the game. When it came to the count up I found I had just missed out on my first win within the competition.
Paul’s Army 21 Losses 20. Graham’s Army 26 Losses 18. A 7/7 result.
So a big thank you to all who took part. I will update you for the knockout stages. I hope you all enjoyed palying some games, and will follow the progress of the Shieldwall competition that Mike is running
