I don't know about anyone else at the club but I'm often on the look out for miniatures manufacturers that I've not used before. Having entered Mike's 28mm Shieldwall Art de La Guerre League I needed some hard charging barbarian cavalry for my Patrician Romans. My Romans are actually Late Imperial Romans and exclusively Foundry figures. Most are not painted by me so they are quite nice. But Foundry don't do Barbarian cavalry for the late Roman period. So I went hunting.
I found some really nice looking Goths on the Footsore Miniatures site and bought a dozen cavalry. This is a brief review of the figures.
1. The riders are pretty chunky chaps and very nicely detailed. They remind me of Gripping Beast figures so maybe there's a connection.
2. The horses are a bit on the large side; some of the bases are more than 40mm long and so they won't fit on a standard ADLG 60x40 cavalry base. I'm not too bothered by this as I'll stick them on 60x60 and it will have no impact in game terms.
3. Footsore offer cavalry in packs of 3 and 3 variants for each cavalry type. I bought 2 packs of basic cavalry, one of heavy cavalry and one of noble cavalry. I intend to mix them up to give variety. Unfortunately one of the packs only had 2 variants in it so I have 12 figures and 8 variants.
4. The horses were hard work to clean up. They had a lot of flash - every horse had flash between the front legs, between the back legs and between the reins and head. They also had flash on the tails and the mould lines were quite pronounced.
5. The rider figures were a lot cleaner and crisper and pretty easy to prepare until...
6. I came to attach the shields and spears. All the riders are armed with javelins or spears so you might expect open hands. No. I had to drill through every hand to make a place for the spears/javelins. The shields had a rudimentary dip in the centre of the back of the shield and the shield hands on the riders had no button or locator to fit the dip. Some of the shields fitted over the hands reasonably well (5) but on the other 7 I ended up using green stuff to attach the shields to the hands. I think these aspects could have been designed better.
The next step is that they are off to be painted. Soon they should reach the gaming tables at the club and you can see for yourself.
