Last night Ken and I played our Shieldwall game. Actually quite historical, with Anglo Danish fighting the Vikings. As Anglo Danish, I took my huscarls as mounted ( I don't think the list is right in this, but they are too good to resist), a load of armoured spearmen, some unarmoured mediocre spear men and a Welsh ally command of medium swords men and a heavy cavalry general.
Ken took a load of armoured elite two handed cutting weapon huscarls.... very nasty, some Irsish mercenary medium foot with two handed cutting weapon, two archer units, some heavy swords men and a Breton ally command with two light cavalry, three medium cavalry, two elite heavy cavalry and two levy foot. All of his generals were ordinary grade.
Ken won the roll for initiative, and decided to attack in Plains. I went for two enclosed field ( one as my compulsory) two plantations and a waterway. Ken decided that that was enough terrain, and went for a gentle hill and a road. The waterway went down on my left, and then everything else went on Ken's side, mainly on the baseline, and then stayed there.
I deployed with the Welsh on my right, so they could run forward and get in the plantations. My huscarls went down next to them, and then I built a long line of my armoured spears, with the unarmoured mediocre ones hiding behind them.
Ken put his archers on his far left, with the Irish next to them, again, hoping to use the plantations. Next to them were armoured huscarls, some more armoured huscarls and then the heavy swords men. On his right he put the Breton ally.
Ken started by keeping his ally reliable, and rushing forward with his light cavalry, getting them in a position to outflank the left end of my line. The rest of his line shuffled forward a bit.
My mounted huscarls thought that their chances against the medium Irish swords were good. However, these were supported by Kens huscarls and some archers, all of which can spoil cavalry's day, so they wheeled across the space between the armies towards the Bretons. My lines shuffled forward, but due to poor command rolls the line became a bit fragmented. The left end of line turned to face off against the light cavalry, with the reserve of mediocre unarmoured spears slowly heading over to fill the gap.
on my right, the Welsh pushed forward. Ken held the archers back, and so the Welsh hit the Irish, with some of my spearline hitting his huscarls. The Welsh were successful, but in the middle a slogging match developed with Ken gradually gaining the upper hand. My mounted huscarls charged his medium Breton cavalry, except for one that had become pinned by his advancing line.
The welsh killed off off the Irish, carried on into the archers and despatched them fairly quickly. My huscarls killed the medium cavalry, and Ken managed to get the heavies into contact with them, which was a more even fight. In the middle, he was gradually chopping away at the spearline, who were accumulating a collection of disorder markers.
So the battle was developing very well. I had won on the right flank, was winning on the left, and holding in the middle. At this stage Ken was on 21 points out if 25, and I had lost 14 out of 24. Then came Ken's best result, where he killed the huscarls general and finished off the middle of my line. My losses jumped to 21! Fortunately for the Anglo Danish, the rampaging Welsh general was close enough to capture Kens camp in the next move, breaking Kens army, giving me a 25-21 win.
A very enjoyable game.
