After last times massive update, I have moved to this thread to make it more manageable
Dear all,
Four games in the last two week to report on. From Friday week ago, we had 1 25mm and 1 15mm game, and the same again last night.
On 16 Nov, Max and Chris M met in 25mm. French Ordonance against English 100 yrs war... a classic match up. Both armies were stuffed full of elites, meaning both were very small at 18 units.
There was a massive exchange of longbow fire, which Max managed to weather, and get his elite knights in against Chris' ordinary knights and medium cavalry (ouch). The medium cavalry died quickly, the ordinary knights did so slowly, and then with disorder markers scattered across the board by longbow fire, Chris' army broke. A close match, that looked very enjoyable.
In 15mm, we saw Joe and Martin face off. Not quite so much a historical match, this one saw Timurids against medieval Scots. Joe supplied a report and here it is:
15mm Medieval Scots, me ( just watched Outlaw King) v Martin’s Timurids. He had a strategist. A foot command with Nelly and 2 cavalry comds on my right. I had 2 pike commands on my left with some longbow and a small Highland ally. Very little terrain went down. We both had fortified camps. I was aggressive with the pike but his cavalry came sweeping in on the right. Not to big a problem as I split off some bow and pike and lined up almost at 90 degrees to protect the flank. They lost every round of shooting! The highlanders went unreliable! Not much of a problem as Martin plied in and made them active. Long story I wiped out his right flank foot command and broke his Army, but he had wiped out the Highlanders enough of the pike and with the last throw of the game took my fortified camp! Draw!
So well played, and well done for Martin for hanging on in there when it looked like all was about to be lost.
Last night, battle of the club competition winners from last year, as Chris R took on Gavin, Medieval Germans against Joan of Arc. A game full of tactical subtlety and nuance ( That lot over there... Charge them! And them! and Charge....)
Chris has kindly supplied a brief write up
Just to record the fact that I won my second game by a solitary point tonight. So my Med Germans are now P2 W1 L1.
The game was very close. Both armies had 20 units. Gavin had 2 levy and 2 LF, I had 3LF and 2 LC. Gavin had 2 foot Xbow and I had 2 foot Xbow and one mounted firearms. So Gavin had 2 extra fighting units. However he left his camp exposed and I captured it. My light foot then were chased off table, but it was 4 v 2 in my favour. From that point on it was all very nip and tuck. Eventually my pikes held and my knights held and Gavin lost a Competent General. And that was just enough to tip it my way.
And just so its recorded, if Chris' light foot had been caught and destroyed, instead of fleeing off table, it would have been Gavin's game. Very close
And the last game was me against Olly, Medieval German against Swiss. Olly fielded a very elite army ( I think 3 units weren't elite!) The terrain was very Swiss, and Olly deployed his army in the gap between two steep hills. Half my knights, facing a wall of pikes, dismounted. My plan was to attack on my right, hold in the centre and delay on my left. And of course, no plan survives contact with the enemy. Olly closed down my left very quickly, and killed them. ( mediocre medium sear in the open against elite swordsmen and pikes, only to be expected really. ) In the centre, my dismounted knights slowed Olly up a bit, but showed that ordinary knights against elite pikes will eventually go in favour of the pikes. My mounted knights matched off against Ollys. Identical troops, but I lost on the dice roll and they died. My only eventual success was on my right where my crossbows and spears managed to kill off some halberdiers on a hill. So Olly easily took the win, and has finished his league games with two wins and a draw, so all to play for there.
Please keep getting the games played. League A in 15mm is looking very sparse at the moment. Obviously, please let me know if I have missed any games out.
Tony
