As we approach the closing stages of the 40k tournament, I thought a round-up of the action to date might be in order, so here goes: Group stages
Group A
It’s fair to say that this Group didn’t really get going, with an early player withdrawal and some other players being too easily distracted by shiny new Star Wars Armada toys to complete their games. In the end, perseverance and an ability to turn up enabled our erstwhile club captain and his merry band of Space Wolves to progress to the quarter finals. Group B
A hard fought group with largely evenly matched armies. I say “largely” because Luke’s Eldar absolutely smashed everyone they came up against. Cyntac’s Harlequins finished in second place to cement the pointy-eared xenos’ hold on this Group. The tournament organiser’s combination of Space Wolves, Knights and Sisters of Battle crashed and burned in third place, their highlight being a very close win against George’s incredible looking Dark Mechanicum army. Group C
Two of our strongest players were drawn in this Group and the results went according to the form book, with Craig’s Tau and Ben’s Dark Eldar taking first and second place, Craig pipping Ben to first place through winning their head-to-head encounter. Pete’s Blood Angels and Guard put in a very respectable performance to take third place, and Matt and Graham fought out the only drawn game of the Group stages to ensure that neither of them finished the tournament pointless. Group D
Every tournament needs a “group of death” and this was undoubtedly it for our competition. Combinations of unashamed cheese and tactical mastery meant Nick’s super-best friends (invisible, teleporting grav centurions!) and Neil’s Necrons (with ALL the wraiths and destroyers!) took first and second spot respectively. However, third place was also rewarded in this group, so Osama and his near-invulnerable Chaos Marines and Daemon army went through to the quarter finals. Very honourable mentions to Paul (more Eldar) and James (dirty Tau) who were always competitive and took some tough defeats on the chin. Quarter finals
Our first round of knock-out games saw Dean play Ben, Luke play Neil, Craig play Osama and Nick play Cyntac. The games produced some surprisingly one-sided affairs but also unquestionable drama, when Nick and Cyntac drew their game, exposing the amateurish nature of the tournament organiser’s rules pack as this situation had not been accounted for. After negotiations continued into early Saturday morning, both players eventually agreed to a replay with Nick winning the rematch and thereby avoiding the need to adlib 40k’s equivalent of a penalty shoot-out. The other winners were Ben, Neil and Craig. Semi finals
Our semi final draw is Ben v Neil, and Craig v Nick. The stage is set for some brutal but high quality matches. Good luck to the remaining players!

Nice summary Matt. Ben & i are scheduled for November 4th. Just in time for the fireworks to start.

Even though I didn't make it through the group stage I throughly enjoyed my games and a thanks to Matt for running the comp. I already have my plans for my army next year. Toys have been bought and construction commenced.
i just hope I get a slightly easier group than I have the past two years

Great write up Matt, it was a shame about my group as it would have been fun to play more games though more difficult for me to have made it to the quarters, but who knows eh? Next year should be interesting if we go down the Highlander comp route, it might come down the generalship and not list building, a low blow? we shall see....

That's the sort of thing that might get my Space wolves, Chaos Marines, Eldar, or Grey Knights back on the table :-)

Yep a thanks from me too. There would have been another game played in group a if the missies hadn't have broken her foot, which would have likely sealed a 3rd loss from 3 for me 😀. I'd like to add a further Thanks to James and Dean for basically teaching me to play 40k during the comp.

Thanks for confirming Deano I think that is an excellent idea there are a lot of people who used to play 40k but have currently "retired" their armies due to the power creep and flying circus that has infested 40 k over the past few years. Hopefully a powered down comp will encourage those people who were used to old style 40 k ie 5th edition to give the comp a try.

It's apt that Deanos post included a link to a 40k comp at adepticon in America as for two years four of us from the club went over and played in the full blown 40k team comp when it was based in Chicago. We didn't exactly sweep all before us but with 100 plus teams envolved perhaps that was not to be expected ! But in neither year did we come bottom
Sadly 3 of those players no longer play the system so anything that might tempt such people back should in my view be encouraged
