Dear all,
please find attached the scoresheet for the Hoplite Happening. I will update this, but you will have to send me your results. 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and the adjustments for not using enough spearmen or bonus balancing points as listed before. Please note that you will also need to keep a count of the enemy elements you destroy, as this will be the decider in case of a tie. Hope that makes sense.
Anyhow, the first battle in the competition was me against Gavin, which was a hard fought and bloody battle. The victor gets to write the history they say, and as that wasnt me Ill shut up and here is gavin's battle report.
My Early Achaemenid Persians, with Medizing Greek allies, took on Tony’s Gauls.
I opted to attack, on a fairly clear plain with just a field on my right flank. I refused my left wing Greeks, with the Persian sparabara in the centre, and subject foot in the field on the right. Cavalry placed on the extreme right.
Tony had heavy gaesati in the centre, with wings of loose order Gauls, and his cavalry facing mine on his left.
My cavalry skirted the right edge of the field and set upon the Gallic cavalry with some vigour. However, the Gallic attack on the field itself bore immediate fruit - eliminating my Paphlagonians and Bactrians. Only the Indian archers and Mysian skirmishers clung on, but fortunately my victorious cavalry returned just in time to hit the Gauls in the rear. This left a handful of Gallic units holding the field whilst being shot down by the Persian cavalry.
In the centre, the gaesati advanced through a hail of arrows to make contact with the sparabara. This ended up as a bloodbath, which then spread to my left as armoured hoplites held off the Gallic right centre. Tony’s right wing crawled forward with low PIP scores, as attrition elsewhere brought him closer to defeat. Never one to make things easy for myself, I left my Greek skirmishers exposed on the left and they were caught by a Gallic charge. This took me from 19 AP to 23 AP, one short of my break. In the final turn Tony sportingly reminded me to rally one of my units and I ended up on 22 AP. I won a couple of key combats in the centre and the cavalry arrows took a further toll, taking Tony over his break point.
This was a really hard fought and competitive game which we thoroughly enjoyed. A good omens for the Hoplite Happening.
So well fought Gavin, and just to point out, the omens are never good for the thing that's just been sacrificed!
The next battle was me against Joe. He took some photos and these are on the Art de la Guerre Facebook page, with his report. But for those of you that dont like facebook...
I had a waterway on my right flank. I deployed some medium swordsmen next to thet, ready to go forward and clear an enclosed field. Next to them were my heavy swordsmen, then my main strength of elite heavy swordsmen. To their left, and lurking in a plantation were the rest of my medium swordsmen. And then further left, filling the gap between the plantation and another enclosed field, were my cavalry and on the extreme left, covering a road through the field, my light horse. Joe had deployed in a similar fashion, infantry against the waterway leading to his cavalry in the clearer area.
The game opened with the horse on the left posturing forward, and the skirmishers of both sides closing to shoot and throw sticks and stones at each other, while the main battle lines plodded up behind. After some fairly nondescript shooting, my far left skirmishers evaded behind my battle line, and the ones in the middle were dead after Joe cleverly launched a weak attack on them, which I thought I could resist, and then reinforced it with some elite cavalry, that I couldn't.
This meant my cavalry had to come forward, and were soon enmeshed in combat. On the right, dealing with the impetuosity of my medium troops meant they ran out of the field and onto Joe's spearline . My heavy swords were following up as quickly as possible. My cavalry were losing slowly, my medium swords were just losing, but the heavy battleline was now close enough to charge. To protect their flank from Joe's cavalry, the medium swords came out of the plantation as cover. Fortunately, when my heavy swords hit Joe's spears, the dice gods were with me , and with that, impact and furious charge, I destroyed three of Joe's units on contact and damaged several more. This was the critical point in the game. My mainline was able to kill enough of the fragmented centre, before Joe's victorious left flank crushed mine, and while my cavalry and mediums hung on just long enough to stop Joe's cavalry attacking exposed flanks. And so victory was mine.
I hope everyone has a good Christmas, and will see you all in the New Year.
