Last night saw two of the games for establishing the final places for the knockout stages. The first of these was Chris against Mike. I didn't get many details of this, other than Mike's medieval gave Chris' Arabs a right kicking. Hopefully, one of them will provide some detail. So now if Mike wins his game against Graham, he goes through.
I played Richard, Carthage against Assyria. Richard had a very defensible position between two patches of terrain, some rough and a village, that he lined with his spear and bow units, with two small mounted commands, one on each flank. I had poeni nobles and some numidians on my left and an elephant, the spear in the middle flanked by the Gauls, and a Numidian command on my right. I pushed forward quickly, meaning on my left there were two horse archers facing two numidians. Richard had to decide whether to evade and risk going off table, or to stand. He stood, but the horse archers were not up to the combat ability of the numidians and were dispatched in short order. My noble cavalry was facing Richards elite heavy cavalry. Combat was joined, and it took most of the fame for my cavalry to be killed. In the middle, I advanced the spearline, but the Gauls hung back, not wanting to be caught in the open.
On the right, my numidians skirmished, drawing Richards cavalry on, but building disorder on them. When Richard charged, the disorder and my greater numbers saw the cavalry join the dead pile.
Over on the left, Richard charged a chariot to drive off my numidians. This had the effect of leaving it vulnerable to a flank charge by my elephant. Although the chariot hung on a turn, its demise was inevitable. On the other flank, Richards other chariot was sighting up on the flank of my spears. However, Richard misjudged how far the Gauls could charge, and this chariot was also hit in the flank, and dragged down by numbers.
My left hand Gauls pushed on, driving off some skirmishers, and clearing a patch of rough, took the camp. This left me needing one more point to break Richards army, whereas I was on sixteen out of 24. The elephant managed to get a charge in on one of Richards heavy cavalry supported by the numidians, and so Richards army broke. A very enjoyable game.
This means if I beat Bryan, I am through. If Bryan beats me, the game between him and Richard will be the decider
