Bryan and I faced off last night to try and decide the "best of the rest" place. Bryan was using Hittite Empire, and I was using Carthaginians ( Hannibal in Italy).
My investment in commanders meant I won the initiative, and chose to attack in mountains. This meant I could get lots of terrain on the table to control where Bryan's chariots went, and also give lots of places that my Gallic warriors could fight in without disadvantage. So the table had lots of steep hills, woods and brush, with a large open area in the middle. Bryan deployed a big command of medium spear men behind some brush and woods on his left, with an all chariot command in the middle and on his right a mixed command of chariots, medium foit and javelinmen. I had my Gauls on my right, then my spears, then my cavalry and elephant and then the numidians.
Bryan had a couple of light chariots deployed forward, I thought as speed bumps but they were actually an insurance in case his ally went unreliable. Some numidians went forward to engage. Actually, all the army went forward as I wanted room to skirmish. More numidians went forward to Bryan's rightmost heavy chariots. In the middle Bryan charged the Numidians. As I outnumbered him and had him disordered, I held. In the way the game was going to go, one numidians died quickly and the other was hanging on.On my right, I skirmished away. This charge meant my elephant got a flank charge into a heavy chariot, which was quickly killed. Bryan was bringing his javelinmen forward, so I moved Nellie forward as a follow up move, into the middle of the bunch of chariots. She didn't last long...
I pushed the Gauls forwards, supported by my spears. One of my spears got a flank charge on another chariot. I was quite confident, elite spears into the flank of a unit, but a six-one dice result saw the spears gaining disorder. My Gauls charged onto his medium spears, disordering most of them. In the middle, my cavalry had enough of skirmishing as they had peeled most of the chariot formation apart, so they stood.
And then it all went wrong for me.... my Gauls managed to get on the wrong end of most of the fights, picking up disorder or dying. Bryan's heavy chariots, despite being outnumbered, hammered my cavalry into the dust. My spears, elite as they were, succumbed to the heavy chariots as well. Bryan played well getting supports and working on flanks and gaps, and rapidly racked up enough kills and disorder to break my army, giving him a well deserved 6-2 win.
Bryan plays Richard next as the decider for the place in the knock outs.
