After looking in envy at both Paul and Kev's uploaded pictures, I thought i'd start posting my rather average table-top standard painting to hopefully inspire others to add to this section, who might also not be as good as them either... Most of my figures are painted as units rather than single miniatures and pictures are taken with a camera phone with no light box, so are of varying quality. If you're lucky you might get a white background, though no promises (nothing professional going on in this post at all!) Most miniatures will have numerous colours and washes applied, with command and characters getting details picked out. Like most players i'll purchase models from ebay normally unpainted. If any of the models show in army shots are not my own, full disclosure will be given (though you'll probably easily pick them out due to the quality of the paint job!) I'll kick off with the latest project, namely the Herd of Khazbar the Magnificent (Beastmen). Small Gor Herd (GW) Razorgor (GW)

Bestigor Herd (GW) and Ghorgon (From Mierce's Banebeast range, so not actually a Ghorgon but I much prefer it to the GW model) I'd claim some originality with the standard design but I saw it somewhere on the internet and liked the simple yet striking theme. Bestigor Herd Ghorgon

After what seems like months of procrastination, I've finally finished the Gor Horde (well as finished as they will get at the minute). I've tied each of the Beastmen units together with a colour scheme that matches the standard. You could argue that as Beastmen they would just have random bits of cloth but I wanted colours that would stand out from (and break up the monotony of painting) the greys and browns. The thought behind it is that each unit has butchered and stolen the uniforms of Empire soldiers. The armour on the Bestigors is also quite pristine and again this was looted off the corpses of the Clan of Karak Silvertop (my Dwarf army). I will revisit these and the other units to add a decal to the standards at the least, I just need to find inspiration to design/plagiarise one I like (and more importantly, one I might be able to freehand!)

Mark how about bit of drybrushing on the furry bits will bring out some depth and is quick and easy to do.

That is a good call and well within my talents! All photos taken on an iPhone 6 (yes I went to the dark side on my latest upgrade). It does take a good shot on the standard setting.

After not having picked up a brush in a few months (and no I haven't drybrushed the gor yet , I thought i'd try and kick start this side of the hobby by entering an online pledge (Monster March) being run by a blogger I follow (Swordmaster of Hoeth). It is a commitment to try and paint a large gribbly in March. The rules are quite loose and so I've entered the below model. As a bonus (as i'm not sure the above is quite monsterous enough), I will also try and do the following 2 models: I'll update progress each week but as a guide, the below is what we have signed up to. 1. Official start and presentation of participants - I will collect the details of participants until Saturday 4th March so that I can initiate the challenge on 5th March and present the participants. This the time for you to plan what would you like to paint, add any blog, website address for me to include etc. 2. Assembling and preparing the model - this goal is to be accomplished until 11th March. You should be able to assemble your models or parts of it, depending how you want to proceed with painting. 3. Painting Stage 1 - First week of painting! It will last until 18th March and may be all about basic colors for entire model. But may as well be about the first part you want to paint completely, as I know that large models require different approach too. 4. Painting Stage 2 - Second week of painting, until 25th March! You should be able to add some more details now, start building some definition to different areas or simply keep adding different parts to your model. 5. Painting Stage 3 - Third and final week of painting! It will end on 1st of April and should see you finishing your model! It may be the time for adding a base too but don't worry if you don't! It is all about the model itself. You may want to take a few more photos than usual, presenting the model from different angles.

So the first week is up and I have a dilemma that I was hoping I could get some advise on. What colour would folks recommend I paint the saddle rim to offset the fuchsia colour. It's somewhat bugging me and I can't seem to find anything I like. (I've not posted pics of the other two models as they just have base coats and initial washes).
Cheers

The horns and the metal are quite well done throughout. The thing that would have the most dramatic lifting effect would to to get an effect on the fur, especially for the brown dudes. Fur is great for getting quite good shading effects quite easilly. I would say brown wash, then drybrush the original brown paint, and then finally a lighter drydrush of a lighter brown, and optionally perhaps one more even lighter drybrush on the face. Or you could get 70% of that effect by just drybrushing the lighter brown.
Another trick that might work well on this army which has tight colourschemes for the units, is to deliebrately spend disproprortionate time on the front rank of the infantry units and get them as good as you can. These are what dominate the vision of the viewer, and allows you to put much less effort into rear ranks.

And for a bonus post, I received a Dwarf Golem in the post from MOM Miniatures in Spain to be used as a greater stone elemental in Kings of War. I was so excited I not only built it the same day but also finished painting it by the end of the second evening. A total rarity for me (love building models, painting - not so much). It includes my first ever attempt to paint Gems (I'm slowly improving and putting more effort in...) and I've included a shot of the model next to a normal dwarf so you can get a size comparison. As normal, the full post on my site is here.
